Run more to calm a running mind
I’m going a little stir crazy out here on Peaks. The pandemic has put a halt to my normal off-island routine: work, groceries, beers at Oxbow Blending and Bottling, and other mainland adventuring. Running helps.
While Peaks is pretty small, you can break a decent sweat on our 3.5-mile loop around the island. For most of the route the Atlantic serves as your running partner – and on the backshore a persistent trade wind keeps you motivated.
I’m not alone in my commitment to the loop. Locals and tourist alike often lace up their sneakers and take to the roads. Typically, I try and get out early, before the sun is high and the island “busy”. I say “busy” in quotes because it’s never really crowded out here but there has definitely been a more consistent stream of visitors now that the weather is warm.
A morning run, sometimes with Quinn in the BOB or sometimes alone, is a good way to start the day on the right foot. It also is a chance to pay homage to this beautiful place we live. It’s easy to forget – having spent over a year here, and more recently nearly five months on lockdown – how stunning the backdrop is. Running grounds me and allows me a moment of gratitude for the island we call home.
Flip me an island hello next time you see me jogging out on Seashore Ave.
