Peaks Island election results

Nearly two weeks ago I took Quinn to the Peaks Island Community Center – which also serves as our library, fire station, police station and ambulance garage – to cast our votes. To be clear, I was the only one voting. Q’s got another 15-plus years until he can complete his democratic duty. But Quinn still tagged along for the spectacle of it all.

With the votes in, well, we waited. Each night Kellie and I put Q to bed and then gathered around the TV as the results trickled in and our anxiety trickled up. Then last Saturday the world – or at least 51% of America – let out its collective breath. For nearly four years I’ve been holding it in. At 11:30am on November 7th I was finally able to exhale.

Energized by the news of Joe Biden’s win and Donald Trump’s loss, we took to the golf cart, which was suited up for the occasion with a Biden-Harris sign festooned on the front. Peaks is certainly a liberal island (literally!) in the middle of the Atlantic, so the mood was incredibly celebratory. The official Peaks Island 2020 Election Results (Zone 1-3) underscore the political climate on-island, with 82% of voters casting their ballots for Biden (and I believe this number doesn’t even take into account mail-in ballots).

Feeling joyful, people strapped American flags to their island cars and carried homemade signs declaring “Free At Last” around the island loop. There was even a pop-up dance party downfront – with revelers twirling and shaking safely six feet apart from their fellow islanders. My buddy Dan and I marked the moment by jumping into the ocean off of Sandy Beach – our adrenaline (and maybe an IPA) staving off any qualms about hitting the frigid water.

The news still hasn’t worn off – although the shine is starting to dull with Mr. Trump’s refusal to play nice. That said, would we expect anything else? No, probably not. But that’s okay. January 20, 2021 is 65 days away but who’s counting. Me – and apparently 82% of our lovely little island.
